Why Using Whitespace on Your Website Matters

Whitespace refers to the negative space used on a piece. It is sometimes brought up in discussions of paintings and how an artist lets a piece of work breathe in certain areas. However, it can also be applied to good website design. Many first-time website designers get self-conscious about their webpages, and they feel a strong urge to use every last inch of space on the page. It can actually work to your advantage to let your content breathe a little so that the reader does not become overwhelmed with text.

The reason why negative space is important is that you want a webpage to appear inviting to a reader. If someone is bombarded with huge paragraphs that barely have any dividers between them, then that individual may click away without even giving the page a chance. Whitespace makes the reader believe that the page is not going to be daunting to get through. First impressions are important, and you do not want your readers to feel on edge before they even start reading.

Negative space also makes it easier to read smaller fonts. Many people are looking up information about companies from their smartphones. The text on a mobile device is naturally going to be smaller than if it was on a computer screen. An ample amount of empty space will make the text easier on a person’s eyes. If a person is constantly squinting, then they are not going to have a good time on your webpage, and that negative connotation is going to stick with them.

Whitespace is beneficial in the way that it can draw attention to certain things you want customers to notice. For instance, most pieces of content should have some kind of call to action within it. This is when you make it clear what the reader should do next. With negative space, the call to action will be better emphasized so that people do not finish reading your article and have no clue how to proceed. When everything is cramped together, readers do not know what is important.

Good website design entails using the page to its fullest potential. However, fullest potential does not mean cramming in as much information as possible onto a single page. Content creators would be wise to learn when it is good to give readers something and when to pull back. As you are looking through other websites to get ideas for your own, give as much attention to the whitespace as the actual text.
